Trace Mineral Sources

Normal additions of trace minerals to nutritionally balanced compound feeds for dogs include sources of the trace minerals - iron, zinc, manganese, copper, cobalt and selenium. For economic reasons they are added in the form of inorganic salts – usually as sulphates or oxides.
. eg. Ferrous Sulphate, Copper Sulphate etc. During the normal digestion processes these compounds are broken down to yield the metal ions which are subsequently absorbed to meet the trace mineral needs of the dog for maintenance and production. Mineral availability from inorganic salts is variable depending upon the individual trace minerals and interaction between added trace minerals can also occur to produce insoluble complexes which are unavailable to the animal and are voided in the faeces.

As an alternative, trace minerals may be added into the feeding regime in the organic form – produced by complexing inorganic salts with an organic substrate. In this way the trace mineral element is bound to an organic molecule (usually an amino acid)and in this form is more stable and does not react with other trace mineral complexes. These chelates or BioPlexes are thus more available to the animal and are absorbed via the normal metabolic pathways for trace minerals AND ALSO via metabolic amino acid absorption pathways.

Thus the replacement of inorganic trace minerals with organic BioPlexes improves trace mineral availability to the animal (in this case the dog). This can be of major importance particularly to competition and working dogs and also fertility in the breeding of pedigree animals. For example. The feeding of organic Selenium improves fertility in breeding bitches and also improves sperm quality in male dogs.

The replacement of inorganic trace minerals with organic BioPlexes is well worthwhile in terms of dog health and skin / coat condition (copper and zinc availability effect skin formation and hair growth and lustre).

newline Canine Supplements contain blends of the trace minerals iron, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese and selenium in the organic (called BioPlex® ) forms only.
